my big kindergartner (it’s so hard to believe)
Today I got to fulfill Samuel’s wish to go to school. He’s only been asking us since May to go back. Monday we had told him that “tomorrow you’ll get to see your teacher!” then I drove him to daycare and he said “huh? why did you bring me here?!” So I had to explain, today you come here, tomorrow we’ll go to school for testing and you’ll come here, Wednesday you’ll go to school for a half day and then i’ll pick you up for a check-up, and then Thursday is your first full day of school. The sad thing is, for Sam anyway, that he doesn’t actually have a half day of school tomorrow. So it’s another day of daycare, and then the first full day of school. I got a few pictures today. He had on his uniform, and loaded down with supplies, we found his classroom. I got to sit in the hall and fill out paperwork while he went in for testing. We went over our letters a lot last night to get in the groove. She had told me that he wouldn’t even talk to her last year. I asked her how he did and she said fine. I hope that means more than just he talked to her. I know that as of last night we’re still having trouble sometimes recognizing “A” “F” “H” “I” “N” “V” and “W” I don’t really know why he gets stuck with “A” it’s in his name, he knows that his name is S-a-m-u-e-l but when you show him the “A” he shrugs. I picked up the best flash cards at Target a couple of weeks ago. Alphabet, numbers (in a fishy go-fish game), insects, presidents and states. We had a good time playing go-fish last night and with a little help (still working on the rules) he actually won, even with my being able to see his cards the whole time.
I was happy to see that a good bit of the children from his class last year are in his class this year, and two of them go to our church. I’m especially excited about this because when you go to church fifteen, twenty minutes from home, around here, you’re usually not in the same school zone as the kids who live near the church. It’s also good because how the birthdays fall with his friends from church; he has one of those birthdays that we were able to start him in pre-k last year, but the others will be starting this year, putting him a year ahead. I like that there will be kids he can see during the week and on the weekends, in his same grade. And even though it’s a year or so down the road, I’ve added their neighborhood to my house hunt list. Before now, I hadn’t realized that it was actually in our school zone, I had hoped but was never sure. That would put us closer to friends, church and PD’s family.
After Testing I took Sam to work with me to visit and have lunch. It was the usual crew, plus one, a wife and child. Sam was really happy to see them. He even got to ride to daycare with a friend. Thank you Kelly!
Tomorrow night my mother and aunt come in town. Thursday is my sister’s graduation! And then Friday evening is our boy’s birthday party!!! Sadly I still have no idea what we’re going to get for him. I guess it’s a good thing his birthday isn’t until Monday! We can spread this out over a weekend. PD’s night classes start Monday, so we decided it would be good to move the party to Friday, that way he and our out of town guests could be involved.
